Bottom line
The Olympus TG-4 is our favourite compact waterproof camera at the moment. On most criteria, we consider it a hit. Robustness (although others are now much more submersible), speed, ergonomics, functionality, image quality, scalability, we liked everything. Sure, some of these points can be achieved under special conditions, such as shooting in RAW for the picture quality, or the purchase of accessories for upgradability (converters, flashes), then there is the risk of increasing, already not so small, price. Nevertheless, the TG-4 is a true adventurer, does what it should best and it’s well worth the money asked, that is approximately 300 pounds.

Canon was one of the first suppliers of optical screen stabilisers in digital compact cameras. After enabling this feature, you can take sharp photos even in low light conditions. If you reach the limits of what is possible, you can set the ISO value to a higher value, to reduce the exposure time.

With 7.5 cm diagonal and approximately 461000 pixels, details can be seen well, even when the sun shines. The CMOS sensor thus offers its pixels quite a lot of space, and even if the resolution for the layman may not sound high, these are good conditions for the image quality.

Image details like with a DSLR you, surely, will not receive. The sensor is simply too small. However, you can receive sharp pictures with good colour contrasts, but only under good lighting conditions. The Canon PowerShot D30 is less interesting than regular digital camera: average sensor, average appearance, average image quality, very simple handling … only the GPS module is slightly out of line. It will be interesting by its survival skills, with which it leaves most other waterproof cameras far behind. Ambitious scuba divers or other action hobbyists will appreciate these qualities.

The compact camera is characterised by a stable plastic housing, which is very comfortable to hold. As a viewfinder, the rear 3-inch display is used. The minimum focal length is 24 mm, the maximum at 120 mm. The 5x optical zoom is sufficient for most snapshots. There are several shooting modes to choose from. Particularly interesting are the integrated GPS module, a compass, an altimeter and a barometer. In this way, each photo will be provided with very accurate location information. Even if the camera saves photos on a normal SD card, it still has a 473 MB internal memory for an additional 50 shots. It is worth mentioning that with the Nikon Coolpix AW130 you can film Full HD videos at 30fps with stereo sound. Bottom line
The AW130 is a real disappointment compared to its predecessor. It ignores new features, a new grip or new components to make the difference. It stagnates, except on one point which we were unable to measure in the laboratory: waterproofness up to 30 m. Nikon would better focus on the image quality and the startup time.

What features are important for an underwater camera?

Before buying an underwater camera, you should compare the data accurately. The most important is the pixel value. Should be able to easily shoot sharp images especially under water. Recommended here is a value of the 10 megapixel or above.

With an underwater camera, certainly, the water resistance is fundamental. It now depends on what depths you want to move. There are cameras that range to 5, 10 or even more than 25 meters.

Haptics is a word that describes the sensitization of the buttons. When you are under water, you have a lower sensitivity of the fingers. Also, you are no longer able to execute the touches precisely.

It is therefore particularly important that the buttons of the underwater camera are bigger and yet easy to operate even after a long time under water.
