Delivery and packaging

The scope of delivery of the Philips Avent SCD 580 includes a baby unit, a parent unit with battery charger, a charging cable and a rechargeable battery pack, a power cord for the baby unit, an instruction manual including Quick Start Guide, an AUX cable and a light blue strap to wear the parent unit on the neck.

The first impression of the device was positive: both units are well made and visually very attractive.

The included instruction manual provides detailed information about all functions of the baby monitor and briefly and concisely explains to what pay attention to during commissioning.

More pictures, for a better understanding of the device, would be better. However, the quick start guide for those who do not want to spend a lot of time reading an instruction manual delivers these.

As described, we put the battery in the parent unit and charged it for about 10 hours on the charging station.

After connecting the baby unit to the mains and turning on the parent unit, the Philips Avent SCD 580 was then ready for operation within a few seconds.

The indicator on the display of the parent unit informed about the successful connection of the two units.

Practical test

Best audio baby monitor reviewsThe Philips Avent SCD 580 proved, during our practical test, to be a true all-rounder. The menu of the parent unit is simply built and we were able to click through the various settings via the buttons intuitively. We really liked the keypad with its soft rubber surface.

Another practical feature is that you can see on the display temperature and humidity level in the nursery, the adjusted microphone sensitivity and see when functions such as the Eco Max mode are turned on.

The instantaneous sound transmission of Philips Avent SCD 580 also was able to convince us. Even very faint sounds were heard at an acceptable volume on the parent unit, and even with music running in the background, we were able to hear crying baby voice.

The sound quality of the intercom function, when the voice via the parent unit can be transmitted to the baby unit, in our opinion could be better; it sounded very rustling.

However, the sound quality during transmissions of the baby sounds to the parent unit were good and noise-free. The sounds seemed only a bit dull, but we saw that in almost all tested devices.

The quality of the connection indoor was satisfied. The signal remained without interference at a distance of up to 30 meters. The signal strength is indicated by an icon on the display of the parent unit.

During the practical test outdoors the first interference and noise occurred after 50 meters; after a total of 90 meters the signal finally broke off. In contrast to other baby monitors in its class, the Philips Avent SCD 580 with this range is more in the average area.

digital baby monitor reviewsAdditional functions, already mentioned, makes the Philips Avent SCD 580 nothing to be desired baby monitor. To soothe the baby it has a night light, lullabies and a star projector, which can be controlled from a distance over the so-called “soothing menu” on the parent unit. To date, the SCD 580 is the only baby monitor with a projector on the market.

We liked the projected on the ceiling colourful starry sky, which changes its form after a few seconds. Also, the calming menu through which the type and duration of the various calming functions can be adjusted individually, we consider very innovative.

Unlike traditional baby monitors, this model, in addition to stored lullabies, allows playing your own mp3s via the supplied AUX cable. However, this works only on a mp3 player or a smartphone – it is not possible to put mp3 files on a built-in baby unit memory.

We gave plus points to the SCD 580 for its pleasant lullabies, whose volume can be reduced to a minimum.

In addition, the baby unit of the device has a temperature and humidity sensor, which transmits the corresponding values on the parent unit. On request, this alarm strikes when a pre-set range is exceeded or undershot. In this way, parents may not worry that it is too hot, cold or wet in the nursery.

Also, the next feeding time can never be forgotten with the Philips Avent SCD 580: the “Feed Timer” fires at the exactly specified time.

With a battery life of about 18 hours in normal operation, the parent unit theoretically can work the whole day and can be recharged again overnight. We evaluate this performance compared to other baby monitors as well.

What is the best audio baby monitorThanks to the adjustable eco max mode, the energy can also be saved, and thus the battery life be prolonged. Since the DECT signal of the baby unit in this mode temporarily remains switched off, so the electromagnetic pollution is reduced.

Some users have reported to us that during the usage an error can occur, which, however, you can fix by yourself (we were able to confirm this in our test). If the talk button on the parent unit is touched for a short moment (less than 1 sec.), the connection with the child breaks for a short time. To resolve – the talk button must be pressed again shortly.

Although this error may still occur in some older versions of the SCD 580, however, according to the Philips customer service, it was now resolved.

With the Philips Avent SCD 580 parents get a baby monitor with a comprehensive equipment, which leaves nothing to be desired.

The peaceful sleep of the child can be supported in many ways, and temperature and humidity sensors allow comprehensive control of their protege for parents.

Taking into account the satisfactory sound transmission and the technically sophisticated equipment the price of the current baby monitor is entirely justified.

Only the battery charging time of the parent unit could be optimised, in our view, by the manufacturer. Here, we recommend the purchase of an inexpensive battery charger and a spare battery pair. So you always have a pair of charged batteries on hand, if a change is necessary.
